Overview
The Art Program in the Bower School of Music & the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Painting. The Bower School currently offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art as well as minors in both art and art history. The Mission of the Art Program is to educate students and the community in the creation and appreciation of the visual arts;
emphasize the importance of context in art history and contemporary culture; provide students with a clear sense of direction towards a career in the creative industries; and teach art with a lively awareness of both global perspectives and local responsibilities.
The Assistant Professor of Painting will teach a range of courses serving undergraduate students in the B.A. Art degree program; be closely involved with curriculum development at the course and program level; participate in program and departmental meetings; advance a personal research/creative scholarship agenda; and pursue service opportunities in the University and community. It is expected that this faculty member will evolve the curriculum to respond to contemporary developments in art and actively assist with recruitment and retention of art students.
Teaching assignments may be on the main campus or at off-campus sites within our region.
- Plans, prepares, and teaches assigned courses, including developing syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments.
- Delivers consistent, interactive, and engaging lectures aligned with curriculum goals and accreditation standards.
- Maintains the highest standards of classroom instruction and engages in reflective self-assessment to ensure continuous improvement.
- Holds regular office hours and provides academic advising and individual support to students.
- Mentor students in developing creative works and finding vocational pathways as part of a socially and culturally engaged academic and regional community.
- Utilizes the University's learning management system and other instructional technologies effectively.
- Collaborates with departmental faculty on curriculum development and program advancement.
- Work collegially and actively on program development and assessment with faculty and staff in the Art Program, the Bower School of Music & the Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Ensures curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
- Establishes and maintains an active research program, including opportunities for undergraduate student involvement.
- Demonstrates evidence of scholarly publication and grantsmanship.
- Engages in continued professional development and maintains professional skills appropriate to rank and field.
- Actively participates in departmental, college, and university committees and meetings.
- Contributes to community, institutional, and professional service in support of the University’s mission.
- Participates in faculty evaluation, student learning assessment, and required training activities.
- Communicates professionally and in a timely manner with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
- Upholds the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, and excellence in all professional activities.
- Complies with University policies, procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- MFA in Studio Art or related fields (Painting, Drawing, etc.) from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
- Two years college/university teaching experience beyond the graduate assistant level with a demonstrated commitment to quality undergraduate education.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching a wide range of studio classes.
- Demonstrated experience with current and emerging practices, including digital tools, in the development of art and painting curriculum.
- Active record of exhibitions, professional activities, and community engagement.
- MFA in Painting or Drawing or related two-dimensional disciplines
- Three years full-time college/university teaching experience in Painting with an emphasis on technical expertise and conceptual development in painting
