Job Summary

Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Library seeks applicants for an internship to staff Ask-A-Librarian, their online research help service. The FGCU Library internship provides current and recently graduated Library & Information Science students with hands-on experience providing research assistance in an academic library environment. Interns will receive training and support from a librarian supervisor to assist users through the Ask-A-Librarian chat reference service.

Additionally, interns will work in collaboration with their supervisor to complete projects.

Availability

Open until filled. Applications received by July 31, 2026 will receive full consideration. Intern will work August 31, 2026 - April 30, 2027, with breaks between December 25, 2026 - January 1, 2027 and March 1 - March 5, 2027.

Compensation

$20 per hour

Schedule

Intern will need to commit to 12 hours a week of work time. This includes 12 hours of chat reference per week, M-F between 10am - 6pm. Upon hire, the intern can choose their own chat shifts but must keep the same hours each week; however, the intern may swap shifts with the other librarians or seek coverage when needed. Other activities will be assigned if chat traffic is low (no questions coming in).

Duties
  • Provide research assistance to users via chat reference.
  • Make referrals to the appropriate FGCU Librarian or staff member.
  • Complete projects as assigned.
  • Meet with supervisor and regularly attend department or other relevant team meetings.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent program in the United States, or have graduated from an MLIS program within the past year and be a U.S. resident.
  • Must be a Florida resident for the entire length of the internship.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Must have a computer and reliable Internet service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework or experience in reference/research services.
  • Ability to evaluate, understand, refer, and respond to research questions.
  • Strong commitment to service.
