In This Flexible Relief Role, Your Contributions May Include
  • Conducting medical evaluations and triage for new arrivals and in‑shelter animals
  • Providing urgent care and stabilizing emergency cases
  • Performing surgical and dental procedures as needed
  • Collaborating on treatment plans with staff veterinarians and leadership
  • Ensuring adherence to shelter medicine protocols and public health standards
  • Supporting cruelty or neglect investigations through medical documentation
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an accredited veterinary institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)
  • Active Florida Veterinarian License in good standing at the time of hire
  • USDA Category I license, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to obtain a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
Supplemental Information

Status: On‑call, relief‑based scheduling

Hours: As needed, typically Monday‑Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; may include occasional after‑hours availability for emergency consultation

Location: Lee County Domestic Animal Services, Fort Myers, FL

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities

All County employees are required to work before, during, or after an emergency as needed. This may include temporarily being assigned to work and performing duties outside of the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
