The Maintenance Technician III performs advanced plumbing maintenance and repairs to university facilities and assists with repairs and maintenance in other trade areas, including electrical as needed. Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs complex repairs to buildings, structures and equipment requiring plumbing skills and expertise.
  • Inspects, operates, or tests machinery and equipment to troubleshoot and diagnose issues.
  • Assists with the development of preventative maintenance guidelines.
  • Provides training and guidance to others in areas of skill.
  • Assists with routine and preventative repairs and general maintenance, including repairing water leaks, installing plumbing fixtures, installing basic electrical devices, and performing other maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Assists with maintenance projects such as inventory management, fire and smoke alarm checks, inspections, or other projects as assigned.
  • Maintains records and logs of preventative maintenance and repair history, inventory used, costs, time and other information requested.
  • Complies with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, university policy and accepted safe work practices.
  • Cleans and maintains all work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintains tool and supply inventory.
  • Makes recommendations on supply and tool purchases.
  • Works a rotating on-call schedule to respond to plumbing emergencies to ensure continuation of service and operations.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.
Other Duties

Assists with routine maintenance and preventative repairs in other skilled trades, such as electrical, as needed to support operations. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • This position requires a high school diploma and six years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional experience in plumbing, such as installation, repair or building maintenance.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Work experience in higher education or a residential setting.
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in a skilled trade or journeyman certification in plumbing.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams.
  • Advanced knowledge in at least two skilled trades such as plumbing and electrical.
  • Knowledge of project and cost control techniques.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Skill in identifying complex problems to develop options and implement solutions.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work when numerous and competing demands are involved.
  • Ability to anticipate and diffuse problems before they occur.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, logs, and files.
  • Ability to work on call rotation for after-hours emergencies.
