Overview
The Registered Nurse is responsible for planning, supervising, and evaluating nursing care of patients and for correlating the nursing process, the medical plan of care, and policies.
This role includes evaluating assigned patients, planning, implementing, and documenting nursing care; assisting physicians during examinations and procedures; performing various patient tests and administering medications within the scope of a registered nurse; promoting patient independence by establishing care goals and teaching patients and families about conditions, medications, and self‑care skills; using experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; performing a variety of tasks;
exercising creativity and latitude; and reporting to a manager or unit/department head.
- Plan, supervise, and evaluate nursing care of patients.
- Correlate the nursing process with the medical plan of care and policies.
- Evaluate assigned patients and plan, implement, and document nursing care.
- Assist physicians during examinations and procedures.
- Perform patient tests and administer medications within RN scope.
- Promote patient independence by establishing care goals and educating patients and families.
- Use experience and judgment to accomplish care goals.
- Report to a manager or unit/department head.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; associate’s degree required.
- Experience: At least two years in a hospital or medically related environment.
- Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to provide age‑appropriate care and understand principles of growth and development across the lifespan; skills to assess data reflective of patient status and interpret information needed to identify patient requirements.
- Licenses/Certificates: Current license with the Alabama Board of Nursing; current BLS required; ACLS required after 6 months.
- Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field.
