Job Summary

THIS POSTING IS FOR THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT IN THE ROAD AND BRIDGE DIVISION

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Maintenance Technician I performs basic maintenance duties and manual work and provides support in the upkeep of facilities, infrastructure, or equipment across various county departments, such as Parks, Recreation & Facilities and Public Works. This entry-level position is designed to provide hands-on experience in routine maintenance tasks and training in the operation of equipment under the direction of more experienced technicians or supervisors.

Essential Job Functions

Routine Maintenance Tasks:
  • Perform basic maintenance duties on equipment and systems, such as minor repairs, cleaning, lubrication, and inspections.
  • Assist with basic upkeep of public facilities, roads, grounds, and park structures, depending on department assignment.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow safety guidelines and protocols, including the use of proper protective equipment and adherence to OSHA standards.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas to ensure safety and efficiency.
Inventory Management:
  • Assist in maintaining inventory levels of tools, supplies, and materials needed for maintenance tasks.
  • Help organize and deliver materials as required by supervisors.
Collaboration and Reporting:
  • Report maintenance issues and needs to higher-level technicians or supervisors.
  • Maintain work records and assist with data entry for completed tasks and service requests.
The following are examples of tasks that may be expected depending on the assigned department. Responsibilities will vary based on the specific needs of each department and the scope of work involved:
  • Parks and Recreation: Mowing, trimming, cleaning park facilities, repairing playground equipment.
  • Facilities: Light plumbing repairs, changing light bulbs, routine HVAC filter replacement.
  • Public Works: Assisting with right of way mowing and maintenance, drainage construction and maintenance, pothole and road repair, and sign maintenance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Maintenance Technician roles require the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects frequently, carrying tools and equipment, and standing or walking for extended periods. Technicians must be capable of bending, stooping, reaching, and climbing as needed for maintenance tasks.

The position may involve working in various positions, including crouching or kneeling, and requires manual dexterity for the use of tools and machinery. Employees must also be able to carry out repetitive tasks that involve physical exertion, such as operating hand tools or handling materials.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: Maintenance Technicians work in a variety of environments, including indoor and outdoor locations. This may involve exposure to weather conditions such as heat, cold, or rain when working outdoors. Technicians may encounter hazardous materials, including chemicals, oils, or cleaning agents, and must follow safety procedures to minimize risks. Work in facilities or on roads in traffic may expose individuals to noise, vibrations, and dust.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to mitigate these risks, and employees must adhere to all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment. Specific requirements include:
  • Mandatory PPE: Employees must wear designated PPE, which may include safety goggles, safety vests, safety boots, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, and respiratory masks, depending on the tasks performed.
  • Safety Training: All employees will receive training on the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and PPE to minimize risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Inspection and Maintenance: Employees are responsible for regularly inspecting their PPE for wear and tear, and reporting any damaged equipment to their supervisor for replacement.
  • Emergency Equipment: Familiarity with the location and use of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and eyewash stations, is required.
