Position: MECHANIC I, II OR III - WATER DISTRIBUTION

The actual salary offered will depend on qualifications and experience.

NOTE:

The level and salary of this position will be determined by the experience level of the candidate that is selected as indicated:

Mechanic III Minimum: $22.99 per hour

Mechanic II Minimum: $20.90 per hour

Mechanic I Minimum: $19.00 per hour

Mechanic I - This is a continued entry-level semi-skilled position involving routine, manual-type labor in the construction, operations and maintenance of Fort Pierce Utilities Water Distribution Systems. Work requires limited judgment and is performed under the direct supervision of the respective Cross Connection Control Team Leader or Service Foreman, or as designated and is subject to close inspection during progress and upon completion of assigned tasks.

Mechanic II - Skilled position in the operation and maintenance of job-related heavy construction equipment in repairing or laying pipe or other construction repair activities of the Water Distribution Department. Requires extensive manual labor to support water distribution functions. Requires considerable judgment and is under the indirect supervision of the respective Cross Connection Control Team Leader or Service Foreman, or designee.

Mechanic III - This is highly skilled lead work involving technical work in the installation, testing, and maintenance of the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority's Water Distribution Department, including routine, manual-type labor in the construction, installation operations and maintenance of Fire Hydrants, Service Lines, Commercial Metering systems, Mainline Control Valves, and Backflow Preventions Devices. This position may be delegated authority and responsibility for a small group of unskilled, semi-skilled employees for a designated period of time.

Work performed requires considerable judgment and is performed under the indirect supervision of the respective Cross Connection Control Team Leader or Service Foreman or as designated.

Note to in-house candidates:
Promotion into Mechanic II and III positions is not automatic. All of the following criteria must be met before promotion would be considered:

1.  Approval of the Department Head;

2. Advancement to Mechanic II - after serving twelve (12) months as a WD Mechanic I, provided he/she has demonstrated that he/she has a clear and demonstrable understanding of all the requirements of the position and has received satisfactory annual evaluations. Must have the Superintendent's approval before being promoted;

3. Advancement to Mechanic II - Employee must have scored above standard in a least four (4) rated categories on the two previous annual evaluations

Advancement to Mechanic III - The employee must have scored above standard in at least six (6) rated categories on the two previous annual evaluations;

           4.
Must be an approved budgeted position, and;

           5.
Must score 70% or better on the qualifying

                     written exam and practical field exam

Mechanic I, II & III - Ability to keep accurate daily field reports and other paperwork and records a required and enter into computer.

Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain harmonious relationships with Supervisor, customers, other employees, other departments, other governmental and regulatory agencies, and the general public as needed.

Ability to efficiently handle emergencies and multiple tasks simultaneously.

Standby duty is required on a rotational basis.

May require shift work on evenings, nights, and weekends.

Wear personal protective safety equipment including but not limited to safety glasses, face shields, hearing protection devices, gloves, safety vests, and hard hats, and OSHA approved safety shoes.

Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions to restore service to customers during emergencies.

Will be required to work under difficult and strenuous conditions due to nature of operating underground utilities system.

Mechanic I - UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION THE MECHANIC I LEARNS TO GAIN GENERAL KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES INVOLVED IN THE PROCESSES OF:

Administrative reporting requirements of federal, state and local regulatory agencies.

Practices, methods, heavy equipment, materials, testing equipment, and other industry related tools and equipment associated in construction, operations and maintenance of a water distribution and metering system.
