Under the general supervision of the Communication Supervisor, the Communications Technician receives complaints from public concerning law enforcement and fire emergencies and broadcasts orders to suitable units to investigate by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned
- Answers all 911 phone calls in a timely and accurate manner. Follows up on all 911 disconnects.
- Communicates via radio, computer, telephone or in person instructions of accidents or emergency situations that require emergency personnel in a timely accurate manner.
- Provides pre-arrival emergency instruction and information.
- Records calls broadcast and complaints received.
- Runs identification and vehicle information checks through proper channels and reports information to proper staff. Retains hard copies as required or requested.
- Questions callers to determine location and seriousness of emergency and response needed. Keeps individuals online when required until personnel arrives.
- Coordinates all police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency requests, relaying instructions to closest and most suitable units available.
- Relays information between hospital staff and emergency medical technicians at site or in ambulance.
- Maintains prescribe contact with emergency personnel to assure safety.
- Transmits and receives messages between divisions of own agency and other law enforcement agencies.
- Monitors silent alarm system to detect illegal entry into business establishments.
- Contacts police officers to verify assignment locations, monitors dispatched units and, when necessary, serves as liaison with caller.
- Tracks and issues severe weather conditions information to safety personnel and alerts general public when required.
- Performs additional duties and tasks as needed or required.
Must be able to work 12-hour shifts. Shifts are 5:00 am - 5:00 pm or 5:00pm - 5:00 am. Shifts switch from days to nights quarterly.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to hear and speak effectively and clearly on the telephone and before groups of customers or employees of organization.
