Senior Mechanical Designer – ABB
The Senior Mechanical Designer is responsible for creating, developing, and maintaining high‑quality mechanical designs using Solid Works to support new product development, continuous improvement, and plant/production needs. The role contributes to design excellence by applying advanced CAD skills, implementing efficient design practices, and ensuring documentation accuracy, manufacturability, and alignment with engineering standards.
Responsibilities- Lead mechanical design and documentation by creating and managing detailed 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and GD&T/tolerance analyses in Solid Works, ensuring accuracy, quality, and adherence to design standards.
- Develop robust, manufacturable mechanical solutions for electric motors and drives, including aluminum die castings, cast iron components, plastic injection‑molded parts, and other precision mechanical elements.
- Drive cross‑functional collaboration and project execution by partnering with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and product management to align design intent with functional requirements, manufacturability, cost targets, and production constraints.
- Support product development and continuous improvement through prototype build support, testing participation, root‑cause analysis, mentoring junior designers, and contributing innovative ideas to enhance design workflows and product performance.
Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering Preferred) with a minimum of 8 years of experience OR Associate’s Degree (Mechanical Design/Drafting Preferred) with a minimum of 10 years of experience in Mechanical Design.
- Expertise in complex part and assembly modeling for production‑ready designs.
- Strong command of mechanical design fundamentals, including GD&T, tolerance analysis, and a variety of manufacturing processes such as die casting, machining, stamping, plastic molding, and fabrication.
- Proven ability to create accurate production documentation, including detailed drawings, BOMs, and engineering records, while supporting design changes and revisions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for engineering analysis, data reporting, and technical presentations.
- Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
- Solid Works PDM (Product Data Management), Solid Works Design Professional Certification (CSWP).
- FEA or simulation tools, SAP or PLM systems, and design support for electromechanical or industrial products.
- PMP Certification, Lean Six Sigma Certification.
- Working knowledge of UL, CSA, IEEE, NEMA regulatory compliance.
