Find your calling at Mercy! Under the supervision of the surgeon, the Surgical Tech First Assist provides additional assistance to the surgeon in the Operating Room beyond the standard support. According to the American College of Surgeons (ACS), surgical assistants aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other inter‑operative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safer operation with optimal results for the patient.

In addition, the CSFA may perform the role of the Surgical Technologist in the OR as needed. The role coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members, maintains patient rights and confidentiality, and performs duties in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and guiding principles.

Position Details
  • Minimum Qualifications (Level II):
    New Grads/Complex/Routine; supports multiple service lines and consistently supports a 24‑Hour Opportunity Location.
  • Education:

    High‑School Diploma or GED and successful completion of a post‑secondary certificate or associate degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited program are required.
  • Licensure‑Certification:
    Certified Surgical First Assistant, Certified Surgical Assistant, or Surgical Assistant – Certified. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Experience:

    Experienced with complex and routine cases, completing all competencies in previous levels in addition to basic competencies of a Certified Surgical Technologist First Assist.
  • Other:
    Must understand English both written and spoken, and must be able to safely and successfully perform job‑related functions, with or without reasonable accommodation under federal, state, or local law.
