The incumbent, under the direction of the Manager, Landfill Services operates some landfill heavy equipment to maintain the city’s landfill according to Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality and Federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIESNote:
All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.
- Maintain and operate Landfill heavy equipment assigned in a safe manner.
- Maintain landfill according to State and Federal regulations.
- Acquire and hold Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality required license.
- Frequent contact with the public and city employees by phone or in person and provide operating information.
- Do random inspections of incoming loads for tires and hazardous wastes.
- Able to operate compost area and convenience center and communicate with the public.
- Perform weed and grass control and pick up litter around the landfill.
- Assist in the cleaning of heavy equipment.
- Regular attendance and timeliness are required.

Minimum Qualifications for EO in Training- High school diploma or GED.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have or be able to obtain and hold a Solid Waste License within one year of employment.

- Must have Apprentice landfill license (level
A).

- Must have a valid driver’s license.

C).
- Experience with operating heavy equipment or construction equipment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment in the department.
- Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.
This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.
