Position: MAINTENANCE PERSON - TRANSIT (CDL) *

JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, provides the labor skills necessary to perform routine cleaning and inspections of each vehicle in the fleet.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Note:

All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.

  • Schedule and prioritize complete cleaning and detailing of all vehicles (40' and 35" buses and administrative vehicles).
  • Monitor maintenance emails to assist in coordinating requires as needed.
  • Assist maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Perform bus change outs during revenue service.
  • Fuel buses.
  • Work with dispatch on changing buses for cleaning or as problems arise.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks/bus wash.
  • Document vehicle defects discovered during routine cleaning.
  • Assist with special projects such as the auction or special events.
  • Maintain bus shelter cleaning. Trash pick-up at all shelters.
  • Deliver parts and supplies as needed.
  • Assist with fare counting when needed.
  • Maintain charter dates and details buses accordingly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement or the ability to obtain one within Nine (9) months of hire.
  • Proof of valid DOT medical certification or the ability to obtain one immediately.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the duties and responsibilities listed above.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Auto detail experience.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department.
  • Problem solving, speed, and accuracy are required.
POSITION DESIGNATIONS

This position is not designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely. This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required. The employee is occasionally required to lift more than 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places.

The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The incumbent is also at risk of electrical shock and vibration. Employee must recognize potential hazards within the work area to insure safe work environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
