EQUIPMENT OPERATOR - INDUSTRIAL COLLECTIONS *
POSITION
DESCRIPTION:
The incumbent, under the guidance of the Department Supervisor, operates roll‑off truck safely while delivering and emptying dumpsters for collection of trash. Maintains department vehicles in good working order.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate equipment as assigned.
- Pick‑up and set boxes in a safe manner.
- Maintain roll‑off tickets.
- Perform pre and post trip vehicle inspection and clean truck daily.
- Wash vehicle as needed.
- Communicate with customers in a pleasant manner.
- Cross‑train to drive all commercial collection vehicles.
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required.
Note:
All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non‑disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position does not have In Training or EOI Classifications.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOII:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class B CDL with air brake upon hire.
- 6 months previous experience operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
- May be required to operate roll‑off truck.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOIII:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement upon hire.
- 12 months previous experience operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
- May be required to operate above equipment plus roll‑off truck.
OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES:
The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Periodically provide dispatching duties. Has frequent contact with customers on needs, changes and procedures.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The employee must frequently stand, walk, climb, talk and hear, occasionally sit, use hands to handle objects and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance or crawl. Vision requirements include close, color, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and works near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and non‑weather related wet, humid and extreme cold/heat conditions. The incumbent is also at risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level is usually very loud.
