Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic; HVAC

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain facility heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
• Repair electrical problems throughout electrical disconnect units.
• Perform routine HVAC preventive maintenance.
• Repair and replace cooling coils.
• Recharge systems to the proper levels of refrigerant.
• Assist boiler plant mechanics with installing, modifying, repairing, testing, and maintaining equipment such as power boilers, auxiliary, and pollution control equipment.
• Align motors and pump shafts.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination based on a completed background investigation.
• Must possess a valid state driver's license.
• Must have Universal Certification for servicing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment (EPA 40 CFR).
• Position is Mission Essential and subject to scheduled or unscheduled overtime and emergency call‑backs during non‑duty hours.
• Requires a pre‑employment physical examination.
• Must be able to work during inclement weather and remain on duty as required.
• May be required to wear protective equipment and clothing.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• Probationary period of one year unless previously met.
• Position may require temporary duty or business travel up to 5% of the time.

Experience includes paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs. You must demonstrate, through application materials, sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work with normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG‑08:
Ability to perform AC equipment mechanic tasks without more than normal supervision, including replacing filters, ignition electrodes, and adjusting dampers.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG‑10:
Ability to repair and install industrial and domestic HVAC and refrigeration systems.

Handles and carries tools and equipment up to 50 pounds. May carry heavier items occasionally. Involves climbing, working from ladders and scaffolding, stooping, bending, stretching, kneeling, and working in uncomfortable positions. Motor vehicle operation may be required.

Work is performed indoors, outdoors, on rooftops, under buildings, and in cramped areas. Exposure to burns, cuts, electrical shock, respiratory ailments, and extreme temperature changes. Potential exposure to toxic refrigerant gases; protective clothing and masks used accordingly. Exposure to noise levels above 85 dB(A) but below 110 dB(A), with hearing protection used.
