Aircraft Mechanics II - General Description

Aircraft Mechanics II must have a combination of experience to repair fuel systems, engines, sheet metal, structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train, and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty required to meet assigned missions.

DUTIES
  • Maintain repairs and modify aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty, maintain and repair aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components, apply technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions, apply required expertise in restoring equipment condition and or operation, and apply comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as blueprints or manufacturers' manuals.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts, require broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair, must have basic knowledge of electrical theory, must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
  • This job requires working knowledge of technical publications. The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher‑level technician, shall occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records.
  • Individuals must be able to prioritize workloads and are required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks. Mechanic IIs can inspect Mechanic IIs and Is.
  • Provides input to Maintenance Engineering Changes (MEC), Estimated Cost of Damage preparation (ECOD) and assist in the recommendation of changes to (MWO).
  • May require specialization in sheet metal, electric work, avionics or other aircraft systems related disciplines.
  • May require the use of HVLP spray gun and various other corrosion control tooling.
  • Work will be accomplished on and off aircraft depending on specific requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience on the C‑130H/J variant aircraft.
  • May be required to be licensed by Federal Aviation Administration.
  • CPR qualified is a preference.
  • Trained on the proper use, inspection, and wear of personal protective clothing and equipment is required.
  • Trained on the use of communication equipment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with recognizing symptoms of overexposure to chemicals, solvents, and fuels.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands, working at heights with fall protection devices.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds and carry for short distances.
  • May be required to read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools.
  • Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to distinguish color and judge three‑dimensional depth.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, APU, etc.
  • Expected to work in high heat or extreme cold temperatures for extended periods of time.
  • May operate in austere COUNS and OCOUNS locations.
  • Ability to wear a full‑face or forced‑air respirator.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
