The Senior Project Accountant is a senior-level, analytical role responsible for overseeing the financial integrity of construction projects—not simply processing transactions. This position requires a proactive thinker who understands construction accounting holistically, anticipates issues before they arise, and partners closely with Operations and Project Management to drive accurate reporting, clean job cost data, and timely billing. Success in this role is measured by judgment, ownership, and the ability to manage complexity across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own full-cycle project accounting for active construction projects, ensuring accuracy and consistency across Foundation, Procore, and related systems.
  • Oversee job cost accounting, AP processing, AR billing, AIA applications, waivers, and revenue flow from setup through closeout.
  • Partner closely with Operations and Project Management to support budgeting, forecasting, billing strategy, and financial decision-making.
  • Maintain financial integrity of project data through ongoing reconciliations between systems and proactive issue resolution.
  • Manage project setup, contract entry, budget input, change management, and documentation controls.
  • Prepare and review job cost, productivity, AP/AR aging, and management reports; ensure timely and meaningful distribution. Process weekly payroll, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Coordinate payroll-related project accounting, including labor reporting, reconciliations, journal entries, and compliance support.
  • Support job closeout activities, including final billings, productivity analysis, and system closeout.
  • Mentor and support less experienced accounting staff through guidance, review, and knowledge sharing
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented with a strong personal standard for accuracy, completeness, and accountability.
  • Takes clear pride in work product; work is reviewed for logic and reasonableness, not just completion.
  • Strategic, analytical thinker who understands upstream and downstream impacts of accounting decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience with both cost-plus and lump sum construction accounting models.
  • Deep working knowledge of construction Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable processes, including billing cycles, retention, and waivers.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple active projects concurrently without sacrificing quality or deadlines.
  • Highly organized; able to prioritize independently and operate effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Solutions-focused mindset: identifies problems early, proposes corrective action, and follows through.
  • Strong project documentation experience, including contracts, change orders, budgets, COIs, and audit-ready records.
  • Collaborative partner to Operations and Project Management with a team-first, service-oriented mentality.
  • Demonstrated patience and capability in mentoring and guiding less experienced staff.
  • Hands-on experience with Foundation and Procore required;
    Smartsheet experience strongly preferred.
  • Exercises sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential financial and payroll information.
