GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking an experienced Construction Inspector. This position will serve as a Construction Inspector reporting to the Project Supervisor or Resident Project Representative on the project. The ideal candidate will perform construction observation and inspection on a variety of Transportation projects throughout Indiana. The candidate will interact with clients, contractors, and the public in meetings and other communication forms.
Will provide documentation of construction progress through daily reports, status reports, and other forms of data reporting. Previous municipal utility inspections (water, sanitary and stormwater) are a must.
- Conduct construction observations and inspections on transportation projects across Indiana.
- Interact with clients, contractors, and the public in meetings and other communications.
- Prepare daily and status reports documenting construction progress and quality.
- Read and interpret construction plans, drawings, and technical documents.
- Inspect contractor work, document progress, and ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Measure and calculate quantities of materials, and perform material testing.
- Review plans and specifications prior to field observations.
- Collect soil, asphalt, and concrete samples, prepare for testing, record data, and produce summary reports.
- Conduct laboratory and field tests according to prescribed procedures, processes, and standards.
- Use specialized equipment to prepare analyses, reports, and technical drawings.
- Communicate field and laboratory testing results with staff, contractors, and clients.
- Knowledge of transportation construction and quality control practices.
- Knowledge of Indiana Department of Transportation, Indianapolis Department of Public Works or other governmental agency specifications, standards and inspection requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and technical documents.
- Experience inspecting contractor work and documenting project progress and quality.
- Ability to measure and calculate quantities of materials.
- Experience performing material testing.
- INDOT certified technician

- Work outside in all kinds of weather conditions.
- Lift heavy objects such as testing equipment and material samples.
- Walk on uneven terrain and navigate steps, stairs and ladders.
- Work in hazardous environments using required Personal Protective Equipment. Environments include dust, noise, tripping hazards, and overhead hazards.
- Develop advanced field operations skills; possess computer skills, good visual and hearing skills, and follow procedures.
- Good organizational skills; work in extreme heat, cold, etc., with safety in mind.
- Flexible with work hours and willing to travel up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend travel.
- Perform physically demanding work; lift and carry 25–50 lbs. routinely; walk for lengthy periods.
5+ years of related experience.
EducationHigh School Graduate or Diploma in a related field.
Certifications / LicensureDriver’s License and INDOT certified technician required.
Technical Responsibilities- Review plans and specifications to prepare for field observations.
- Conduct tests and investigations in the field or laboratory to obtain data for engineering and technical personnel.
- Collect soil, asphalt, and concrete samples, prepare for testing, record data, and prepare summary reports.
- Document field activities, observations, and testing results on projects.
- Perform laboratory and field tests according to prescribed procedures, processes, and standards.
- Use specialized equipment and apparatus to prepare analyses, reports, and technical drawings.
- Communicate field and laboratory testing results with staff, contractors, and clients.
Begins to lead tasks.
