JOB DESCRIPTION

Perform a variety of health care activities involved in assisting assigned special education students with special medical needs; assist faculty in working with special education students including student health care, instructional and related support activities.

Incumbents must possess a valid LPN license.

REQUIREMENTS

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level course work in nursing. Incumbents must possess knowledge of the general aspects, methods, processes, principles, practices, procedures and terminology used in assigned field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide medical assistance and health care to special education students; monitor, assess and respond to the medical conditions and health care needs of assigned students; confer with faculty concerning health care and instructional activities to meet student needs.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene including dressing, washing and grooming as assigned by the position; assist students with eating activities; toilet students and change diapers and soiled clothing as needed.
  • Provide treatment and administer first aid and emergency medical care as necessary; coordinate response to emergency situations as necessary; administer and assist students with tube feedings, catheterizations and other health care activities as required.
  • Assist teachers with various instructional activities for individual or small groups of special education students; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
  • Escort students to and from buses, classes and other locations as assigned; push student wheelchairs; lift students in and out of wheelchairs and other equipment; load and unload students on and off of buses as required; accompany students for transport as needed.
  • Assist students with physical therapy, occupational therapy, positioning, percussion activities and related exercises as assigned; utilize and assist students with adaptive equipment; assist students with developing mobility skills.
  • Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; assist students with handling educational materials.
  • Operate specialized medical equipment and instruments in the assessment and treatment of students; assure cleanliness and sanitary conditions of medical instruments, equipment and assigned areas.
  • Accompany and assist students in mainstreamed classes as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in various in-services and training activities as directed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
  • * New employees must successfully complete their probationary period to be eligible to apply for posted positions.

    * Employees must remain in their current position a minimum of sixty (60) calendar days to be eligible to apply for any non-lateral posted position.

    * Current non-probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.

    The employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee is required to have dexterity of hands and fingers. The employee is required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. They may be occasionally required to bend at the waist, kneel or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

    While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or walking  incumbent will be required to lift, carry and/or push students in wheelchairs as assigned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
