Under the direction of the Graduate Leadership and Business Programs Director, adjunct faculty receive a one‑semester appointment in teaching. Adjunct faculty members assess, plan, implement, and evaluate instruction for students in online and/or classroom settings in coordination with established course and program objectives. This is a part‑time, adjunct faculty position for 8‑week online asynchronous graduate courses and undergraduate online and/or onsite courses in Fort Wayne, IN.
Adjuncts must demonstrate willingness and ability to support and actively contribute to the Catholic and Franciscan mission and values of the university.
The Business Law adjunct faculty member must have expertise in the following areas:
- U.S. legal and government systems.
- The role of the law and legal systems in the business environment as they pertain to the U.S. Constitution, interstate commerce, and contract law (public vs. private).
- Scenarios involving basic agency, contracts, torts, intellectual property (IP), and other business law concepts.
- How to distinguish types of business entities and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each, including structuring and financing issues, tax considerations, founder/investor conflicts, liquidity and exit issues.
- Comparing various forms of conflict resolution including litigation and alternative dispute resolution and when to use them.
- Review the course prior to publication and suggest improvements.
- Regularly post announcements to keep students informed.
- Respond to student or university communications in a timely manner.
- Actively engage with students via discussion forums, email, and/or optional synchronous sessions.
- Grade assignments promptly and provide detailed feedback.
- Adhere to all university academic and employment policies identified in the Employee and Faculty handbooks, Policy Library, and academic catalogs.
- Participate in assessment of curriculum in coordination with the Graduate Business Programs Director.
- Attend adjunct meetings as requested.
- Respect the moral and religious beliefs of the university and students; use discretion when expressing personal beliefs. Academic freedom does not include teaching controversial matters unrelated to the subject or advocating against Catholic faith or morals.
- Actively contribute to the Catholic and Franciscan mission and values of the university.
- J.D. or a Ph.D. or DBA with a business law emphasis preferred.
- A graduate degree, work experience or teaching experience in law or a related field, and the ability to teach ethics and law in an applied format.
- Prior post‑secondary teaching experience preferred.
- Five years’ professional experience within the discipline preferred.
- Demonstrates competence in educational principles, instructional methods, evaluation techniques, and technology used in higher education classrooms, laboratory and clinical settings.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the profession including theory and practice, procedures, and regulations.
- Demonstrates proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and electronic) necessary to interact effectively with students, faculty, professional staff, administration, clinical affiliates, and the community.
- Demonstrates skill in goal setting and team building.
- Demonstrates analytical and organizational skills to plan, implement, and evaluate program activities.
- Demonstrates honesty and loyalty to the university and supports its mission and religious affiliation.
- Demonstrates ability to coordinate services to the needs of diverse populations within the time and financial limits of the institution.
- Must be willing to work irregular, and sometimes long hours, including weekends and university breaks.
