Position: Towles | 5hr Montessori Classroom Assistant Grades 4-5 | Intermediate

Job Description

Instructional Assistant will support student learning using Montessori materials and district models in small group and one-on-one instruction. Successful candidates must be able to sit on the floor with students during activities. This person will support procedures, policies, and discipline within the classroom and building.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with a Montessori program preferred.
  • Computer skills helpful.
  • Strong desire to see students succeed.
  • Sincere concern for youth, strong work ethic, and ability to positively motivate students.
  • Must provide proof of education at time of interview (official transcripts and/or Para Pro results).
Essential Functions
  • Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment; monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects; provide instructional support to various teachers.
  • Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework, and projects in various subject areas; answer questions, provide proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance.
  • Perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments; maintain student records and files as assigned.
  • Assist teachers with implementing lesson plans; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs; explain and assure student understanding of classroom assignments and homework instructions.
  • Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor students during outdoor and recess activities as required; monitor and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned by the position; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition, spelling, and writing exercises and assignments.
  • Provide classroom support to the teacher by preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters and displays, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
  • Probationary Period
    • New employees must successfully complete their probationary period to be eligible to apply for posted positions.
    • Employees must remain in their current position for a minimum of sixty (60) calendar days to be eligible to apply for any non-lateral posted position.
    • Current non-probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.

    While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear, has dexterity of hands and fingers, and is required to sit or stand for extended periods. Employees may be seated or walking at will and may be required to lift, carry, and/or push students weighing 25 pounds or more in wheelchairs as assigned.

    Employees may be frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
