Job Description
Instructional Assistant supports student learning using Montessori materials and district models in small group and one‑on‑one instruction. Must be able to sit on the floor with students during some activities and support procedure, policy, and discipline in the classroom and building.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working with Montessori program preferred.
- Counseling and computer skills helpful.
- Strong desire to see students succeed, sincere concern for youth, strong work ethic, and ability to positively motivate students.
Candidate should provide proof of education at time of interview (official transcripts and/or Para Pro results).
Essential Functions- Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students.
- Monitor and oversee student drill practices, assignments, and various subject areas.
- Provide instructional support to teachers and assist students with classroom assignments, homework, and projects.
- Answer questions, provide examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance.
- Perform clerical duties such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments; maintain records.
- Assist with implementing lesson plans; confer with teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs and explain homework instructions.
- Observe and control student behavior in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor students during outdoor and recess activities; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
- Read books to students; assist with letter and word pronunciation, recognition, spelling, and writing exercises and assignments.
- Provide classroom support by preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters, displays, and collecting supplies and materials.
- Assure student health and safety by following health and safety practices; maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly, and clean manner.
- Perform related duties assigned by the administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
- New employees must successfully complete their probationary period to be eligible to apply for posted positions.
- Employees must remain in their current position a minimum of sixty (60) calendar days to be eligible to apply for any non‑lateral posted position.
- Current non‑probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.
The role requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time; occasionally bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; dexterity of hands and fingers; close vision and ability to adjust focus. The incumbent may be required to lift, carry, and/or push students weighing 25 pounds or more in wheelchairs as assigned. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities as required.
