Job Description

Provide voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting and other support services for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students, and offer translating, tutorial, and instructional support to meet their needs.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school (or equivalent).
  • Ability to interpret using Signing Exact English (SEE) or American Sign Language (ASL) in both receptive and expressive capacities.
  • Possess an Educational Interpreting Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 3.5, or hold a certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.
  • Preference for candidates with previous experience working with special‑needs students.
  • Flexibility to meet changing needs of Deaf/Hard‑of‑Hearing students and ability to relate well with students, staff, and parents.
  • Required to participate in Indiana Department of Education training to earn a minimum of 36 Professional Growth Points (PGP) every two years.
  • For Alternative Functional Programs applicants, must pass level 1 of the FWCS Sign Language Assessment.
Essential Functions
  • Interpret and transliterate for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students to reinforce and follow‑up on instructional concepts across subject areas.
  • Provide interpretation services to facilitate communication among students, faculty, staff, parents, and others, using appropriate language register and speaker intent.
  • Offer expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration for classroom activities, meetings, conferences, counseling, field trips, assemblies, uncaptioned films, videos, daily announcements, and other events.
  • Assist teachers with instructional activities for individual or small groups of special education students, providing answers, examples, and other supports.
  • Perform clerical duties such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials.
  • Provide behavioral supports in accordance with approved procedures, monitor students during outdoor activities, and report progress.
  • Interpret questions, responses, comments, explanations, and other communications between stakeholders.
  • Escort students to and from buses, classes, and other locations; assist with wheelchair push, lift, and other mobility needs.
  • Help students complete classroom assignments, homework, and projects across subject areas; assist with handling materials and self‑care activities.
  • Confer with students, teachers, and administrators concerning instructional functions, interpretation services, educational progress, and related issues; participate in the IEP process as assigned.
  • Attend yearly Sign Language Assessment conducted by FWCS Department of Special Education and participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and in‑services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the building/unit’s needs.
Probationary Period
  • New employees must successfully complete the probationary period to be eligible to apply for posted positions.
  • Employees must remain in their current position for a minimum of sixty (60) calendar days to be eligible to apply for any non‑lateral posted position.
  • Current non‑probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry students weighing 50 pounds or more in wheelchairs, and may frequently be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.

Salary: $16.58 to $23.31 Per Hour
