Job Description: Provide voice‑to‑sign and sign‑to‑voice interpreting and other support services for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students; provide translating, tutorial, and instructional support services to meet their needs.

Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreting Performance Assessment (EIPA) or certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.
  • Ability to interpret using Signing Exact English (SEE) or American Sign Language (ASL) (both receptive and expressive).
  • Preference for candidates with previous experience working with students with special needs.
  • Flexibility to meet changing needs of Deaf/Hard‑of‑Hearing students and ability to relate well with students, staff, and parents.
  • Required participation in training to earn a minimum of 36 Professional Growth Points (PGP) every 2 years, as mandated by the Indiana Department of Education.
  • For applicants to Alternative Functional Programs, certification of Level 1 FWCS Sign Language Assessment.
Essential Functions
  • Interpret and transliterate for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students across subject areas, following the Indiana State Board of Education Educational Interpreter Code of Ethics.
  • Provide interpretation services to facilitate communication among students, faculty, staff, parents, and others, ensuring clear understanding of instructional directions.
  • Offer expressive and receptive interpretation for classroom activities, meetings, conferences, counseling, field trips, assemblies, uncaptioned films/videos, daily announcements, and other events.
  • Assist teachers with instructional activities for individuals or small groups of special‑education students, answering questions, providing examples, and other support.
  • Perform clerical duties such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials.
  • Provide behavioral support in classroom and other school facilities, monitor outdoor activities, and report on student behavior progress.
  • Interpret questions, responses, comments, and explanations between students, faculty, staff, and others.
  • Escort students to/from buses, classes, and other locations; push, lift wheelchair, or assist with equipment as needed.
  • Assist students with completing assignments, homework, and projects across subject areas and with mobility and self‑care activities.
  • Confer with students, teachers, and administrators on instructional functions, interpretation services, educational progress, and related issues; participate in the IEP process as assigned.
  • Participate in yearly FWCS Sign Language Assessment for advancement, and attend meetings, conferences, trainings, and in‑services as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as requested by the Administrator.
  • Probationary Period
    • New employees must complete a probationary period to be eligible for posted positions.
    • Employees must remain in their current position for at least 60 calendar days to be eligible for non‑lateral posted positions.
    • Current non‑probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.
    Physical Requirements

    Employee is required to speak and hear, have hand/finger dexterity, sit or stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, or crouch occasionally, maintain close vision and adjust focus. Employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry students (up to 50 pounds) in wheelchairs, and be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
