Job Summary:
Canterbury School, Fort Wayne, Indiana is seeking a dynamic, joyful, and creative Teaching Assistant to educate and care for students in our Early Childhood Program (8:00-3:15), and in our Extended Day Care (EDC) Program (3:15-5:00). Working under the guidance of the Lead Teacher and EDC Leader, the Assistant will implement play and learning experiences in line with our school mission and goals.
Our faculty and staff work together to ensure that the School lives up to its Mission to ”maximize the potential of young people by providing a challenging, enriching, and supportive learning environment in which students build the foundation for a life of purpose, passion and meaning.”
Responsibilities include:
- Create a warm, loving and safe environment for children
- Scaffold children’s learning during child-initiated activities and adult-led instruction
- Encourage diversity by including all students and engaging in anti-bias practices
- Work with the lead teacher to develop engaging experiences that encourage children’s physical, social/emotional, linguistic, and cognitive development
- Work with the lead teacher and special area teachers to observe, record, and assess children’s learning and development
- Communicate with families
- Perform general set up and clean up duties including assisting with snack; maintaining the sanitation of toys, manipulatives, and the general surroundings
- Provide for the safety and general hygiene of children including assisting with toileting, and hand washing; supporting children to assess risk during outdoor play and education; helping with carpool; supervising recess
- Collaborate as a team to further develop our program, including attending team meetings, professional development, and faculty work days
- Perform other related duties as may be assigned
Essential Skills and
Qualifications:
- One of the following: a current CDA credential or equivalent; or an associates or bachelors degree in early childhood education or elementary education; OR proof of enrollment in one of these programs; OR an associates or bachelors degree in another discipline
- Ability to interact and play with children at their physical level, indoors and outdoors in different weather
- Lifting children and moderately heavy objects
- Basic knowledge of early childhood development principles, health and nutrition standards, and methods of supervising children
Desirable Skills and
Qualifications:
- Experience working in an early childhood setting, elementary school, or out-of-school program for children
- Proficiency in English and Spanish/Other language
