Middle School Social Studies & Religion Teacher

Department: Middle School Faculty

Reports To: Head of Middle School / Middle School Director

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Middle School Social Studies and Religion Teacher is responsible for guiding students across Grades 6–8 through the study of human history, geography, civics, and religious education. The ideal candidate will cultivate critical thinking, cultural literacy, empathy, and ethical reflection. In addition to instructional duties, the teacher serves as a student advisor and contributes actively to the broader school community.

  • Design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate curricula in both Social Studies (e.g., World History, Ancient Civilizations, Geography, Civics) and Religion / World Religions / Ethics.
  • Facilitate discussion-based learning, primary source analysis, research projects, and ethical discussions that encourage critical thinking and global perspective.
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles, academic needs, and developmental stages of early adolescents.
  • Integrate educational technology, digital literacy, and cross-curricular concepts (e.g., writing, media analysis, service learning) into daily lessons.
  • Assess student growth using a mix of formative and summative assessments, essays, research projects, and reflective journals.
  • Facilitate advisory discussions centered on character education, digital citizenship, conflict resolution, and executive functioning skills.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for advisees' families regarding overall progress and well-being.

3. Parent & Community Communication

  • Maintain regular, proactive communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and challenges.
  • Write detailed, thoughtful narrative progress reports and conduct parent-teacher/student-led conferences.
  • Collaborate closely with grade-level teams, learning specialists, and school counselors to support individual student needs.
Qualifications

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in History, Social Studies Education, Religious Studies, Theology, or a related field required;
    Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: 2–5 years of middle school teaching experience, preferably in an independent or faith-based school setting.
  • Subject Expertise: Strong grounding in historical inquiry, global geography, and religious/ethical instruction, with the ability to foster respectful dialogue around diverse perspectives and faiths.
  • Classroom Management: Firm, empathetic approach to middle school behavior management that balances clear structure with warmth and humor.
