Senior Systems Engineer – Flight Test Engineer
The Collins Collaborative Mission Autonomy team is looking for an experienced Senior Systems Engineer – Flight Test Engineer with an active U.S. Secret security clearance to join our team. This onsite position can be based in El Segundo, CA (preferred), or Fort Wayne, IN;
McKinney, TX; or Cedar Rapids, IA. At Collins Aerospace, you will work on cutting‑edge technology and contribute to programs that save lives and enable freedom.
- Participate in collaborative, cross‑discipline integrated product teams composed of systems, software, test and mission engineering.
- Test mission‑autonomy software and integrate simulation equipment into SWIL and HWIL setups.
- Debug mission‑autonomy software as part of the integration team.
- Integrate, test, verify, and validate the system and various subsystems.
- Travel to customer test events to support operations.
- Assist with equipment setup at test sites and during customer test events.
- Assist Flight Test Engineers on a variety of operational tasks such as flight execution, material preparation, or supporting test profiles by participating in demonstrations.
- Support pre‑flight system performance assessment and post‑flight verification analyses.
- Travel occasionally to support working groups, integration and test, and/or customer events (up to 40 % travel).
- Demonstrate completion of assigned tasks on time, on budget, and with high‑quality work products.
- Work well with other team members, teammates, and disciplines.
- Experience integrating hardware and software; or experience with SWIL / HWIL.
- 5+ years of work‑related experience in Systems/Software Engineering, including distributed software systems.
- Experience supporting integration and test activities of complex systems.
- Technical writing experience (e.g., System Engineering Management Plans, Technical Reports, Engineering Notebooks, Test Plans/Reports).
- Software development experience using C, C++, Python, or similar languages.
- Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or an advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience.
- U.S. citizenship and an active, transferable U.S. government‑issued Secret security clearance required prior to start date.
- Knowledge of Linux, real‑time operating systems, or avionics communication protocols (e.g., MIL‑STD‑1553, STANAG‑4586).
- Experience integrating and troubleshooting real‑time systems, sensors (IMUs, GPS), or actuators.
- Familiarity with agile development, Test‑Driven Development, or similar software development methodologies.
- Flight software integration and verification experience.
- Experience using lab equipment to troubleshoot hardware and software failures in support of SWIL/HWIL integration and testing.
- Experience supporting system integrators with cabling prep, assembly installation, component configuration, and system validation.
- Demonstrated ability to perform work without appreciable direction.
- Ability to work on site regularly (60 % +).
- Master of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET‑approved college or university.
- Active, transferable U.S. government‑issued Top Secret security clearance.
