Machining Team Lead

Summary

Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and CNC machines and machining centers to fabricate metal parts by performing the following duties.

• Studies blueprints, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Selects program if available or programs functions to create a part per blueprint by selecting fields to enter part and tool set-ups considering tools needed, tolerances, material type, quantity and resources available.
• Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
• Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines.
• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
• Runs trial to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data control.
• Runs machining center, including but not limited to, prepping parts, loading parts, starting and observing machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machining controls, and unloading parts.
• Grinds, files and sands machined parts. Cleans machined parts.
• Performs first-piece and in-process inspection by checking dimensions of part per blueprint using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and tape measure. Inspects parts according to C=0 chart. Completes inspection form.
• Performs routine preventative maintenance and general repairs on machines as required. Completes maintenance log.
• Sets up and operates manual machining equipment as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Ensures PM forms are filled out daily.
• Reviews Safety/QMS performance for the team for previous 24 hours.
• Ensures that every team member has proper PPE at all times
• Addresses unsafe work environment immediately and takes action to correct the issues along with the assistance of the supervisor
• Includes safety communication with every team member prior to shift
• Updates supervisors daily regarding any unsafe behaviors on the team
• Exercises sound judgment in being professional in their conduct and doing what is right whether or not anyone else is watching
• Demonstrates honesty and directness in communication
• Establishes trust among staff, colleagues, and superiors, demonstrates the ability to be trustworthy
• Follows tasks through to completion
• Willingness to accept critique or criticism from others. Demonstrates the willingness to change or improve and then move on with professionalism and grace
• Looks for new ways to solve old issues
• Assists supervisor in closing out hold tags within 24 hours consistently
• Participates with supervisor in any corrective action items for timely completion
• Helps to ensure that the team members know and follow the control plan consistently. Communicates with supervisor daily regarding any control plans that are not being followed
• Maintains team boards and ensures that they are up to date on a daily basis
• Assists the supervisor in ensuring that employee evaluations are scheduled in a timely manner, offers good judgement on employee evaluation scores, and helps to keep evaluations up to date
• Assists the supervisor in ensuring that employees are recognized for strong performance
• Assists the supervisor in ensuring that underperforming employee issues are being addressed with direct, honest feedback and coaching
• Exercises sound judgment in making recommendations to the supervisor regarding any team members violating company handbook policies
• Demonstrates a clear understanding of what it takes to win or lose in the production environment, motivates staff accordingly, and the area shows improvement over time

This position may direct entry-level machinist positions in set-up and training. It may require occasional supervisory responsibility in the absence of the Team leader.
