Position: Med/Surg Registered Nurse

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Med/Surg Registered Nurse (RN) to join a large hospital environment caring for a diverse adult patient population with a broad range of medical, surgical, neurological, infectious, and chronic conditions.

The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of Med/Surg experience in a large hospital with 450+ beds
, along with 1.5+ years of Level I, Level II, or tertiary-care experience
. Strong general Medical/Surgical nursing skills and the ability to manage multiple diagnoses and complex patient needs are essential.

Patient Population

RNs will care for patients with a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • COPD, diabetes, CHF, and end-stage renal disease
  • Pancreatitis, GI bleeding, gastroparesis, and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, and

    C. difficile
  • Stroke, dementia, and traumatic brain injuries
  • Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse
  • Patients undergoing diagnostic and surgical procedures
Common Procedures

Patients may undergo procedures including:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Thoracentesis
  • Paracentesis
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Incision and drainage
  • Biopsies
  • Amputations
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive Medical/Surgical nursing care.
  • Perform assessments and develop individualized care plans.
  • Monitor patient conditions and identify changes requiring intervention.
  • Administer medications and provide IV therapy.
  • Manage Heparin and Insulin drips according to hospital protocols.
  • Manage IV pumps, feeding pumps, feeding tubes, chest tubes, and wound vacs.
  • Provide wound care and utilize heat/cooling therapy as needed.
  • Monitor telemetry and recognize changes in cardiac rhythms.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring using Accu-Chek.
  • Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Maintain accurate documentation using Epic EHR

  • Safely prioritize and manage a patient assignment of approximately 5–6 patients
    .
  • Float to other Medical units based on hospital staffing needs.
Required Experience
  • Minimum 1.5 years of Level I, Level II, or tertiary-care experience – Required
  • Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg experience in a large hospital with 450+ beds – Required
  • Strong general Medical/Surgical nursing experience
  • Experience with complex medical and surgical patients
  • Ability to manage multiple diagnoses and prioritize care in a fast-paced hospital environment
Required License & Certification
  • Active Indiana RN License or Compact RN License – Required
  • BLS through AHA – Required
Staffing & Patient Ratios
  • Typical RN-to-patient ratio: 1:5–6
  • Med/Surg RNs will float to other Medical units based on the greatest staffing need.
  • Floating is limited to other Medical units
    .
Schedule
  • 12-hour shifts
  • 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
  • Additional scheduling requirements may be determined by unit needs.
Orientation & Training

The facility provides a structured Jump Start Orientation for supplemental staff, including:

  • 1 day of general hospital orientation
  • Approximately 5 days of nursing/unit orientation
  • Epic training/classes included
Technology & Equipment

RNs will utilize:

  • Epic Electronic Health Record
  • Pyxis medication dispensing systems
  • Accu-Chek blood glucose monitoring
  • Hospira IV pumps
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • SCDs for VTE prevention
  • Wound vacs
  • Feeding pumps and tubes
  • Chest tubes
