ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Acts as the first responder to any threat or danger to staff, offenders, visitors, or the building. Visually inspects all persons entering ACJC and regional field offices and removes anyone who possesses a danger. Operates x‑ray machine and hand metal detectors, and conducts pat‑down searches as deemed appropriate to ensure the person does not possess weapons, contraband or other illegal items.
  • Provides security and bailiff duties for assigned courtrooms. Notifies parties of hearing location, delivers juveniles to the appropriate courtroom, calls cases to Court, issues personal property to parents/legal guardians, and assists with taking juveniles and adults into custody per Court Order.
  • Monitors distress panels and responds to distress calls. Responds to conflicts between juveniles and/or adults within the center, sometimes using physical restraint. Responds first to medical emergencies in public areas and calls 911 while escorting emergency personnel.
  • Monitors ACJC and regional field office buildings using video surveillance and visual inspection to ensure safety and compliance with program rules.
  • Answers telephone and greets clients and families, determines nature of calls or visits, provides assistance or refers to appropriate person, and supervises juveniles and families while they wait for appointments.
  • Actively supports probation officers with crisis intervention, supervises juveniles doing community service work, and documents contacts or information when officers are not available.
  • Enters information into Quest case management system: juvenile and attorney check‑in, visitor log, Probation and Detention release forms. Updates files and records to reflect status changes, shreds outdated confidential information, scans outside correspondence and enters drug screen information.
  • Notifies warrants of adult custody, transport needs, and escorts adults to sally‑port. Assists with transporting juveniles outside the building for court or medical appointments.
  • Maintains weapon lockers in the security office and is required to qualify and carry a County‑issued firearm and/or an electroshock weapon such as a “Taser.”
  • Assists in the collection of urine samples and/or alcohol breath tests upon request of the Judicial Officer and/or Probation Department.
  • Receives items for juveniles such as medication, glasses, retainers, HSE or stamp money and provides receipts.
  • Manages office supplies, submits orders when needed, maintains office equipment, and performs day‑to‑day maintenance (vacuuming, dusting, trash, wiping kitchen/bathroom surfaces).
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required by law, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of policing, corrections, and/or military training/experience.
  • Ability to become certified in Defensive Tactics, OC Spray, and Electroshock Weapons.
  • Ability to complete and maintain Firearms Qualifications.
  • Valid Driver’s License to assist with transporting juveniles.
  • Valid CPR/AED and First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to be trained and sworn as a Special Deputy for the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to apply procedures, rules, and regulations in a practical manner to maintain effective court building security.
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, including area law enforcement and court procedures to ensure compliance with policy and procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to deal with irritated, rude, or frustrated people with tact and attempt to diffuse situations while treating people of different backgrounds with courtesy and respect.
  • Ability to write detailed reports based upon public disturbances and juvenile misconduct.
  • Ability to use pepper spray, handcuffs, handguns, x‑ray machine, emergency restraint chair, and other job‑related equipment.
