Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Deputy Supervisor of Downtown Areas, the Journeyman Electrician performs journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance involving commercial-level electrical, building controls, electronic heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
Essential Functions- Responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, components, switchgears, motors, compressors, generators, transformer taps and equipment related to commercial buildings.
- Troubleshoot electrical issues and identify the root cause of problems in electrical systems.
- Read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to understand the layout and specifications of electrical systems.
- Adhere to safety protocols and standards to prevent accidents, electrical hazards, and injuries.
- Maintain strong understanding of electrical codes and regulations.
- Conduct thorough testing and inspection of electrical systems.
- Collaborate with other electricians, contractors, or other tradesmen as part of a team.
- Lead others in the fabrication or modification of existing or proposed equipment, facilities, systems or their components.
- Prepare estimates for unique or complex operations, maintenance and special projects.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of electrical work.
- Work directly with other departments, providing excellent customer service.
- Prepare oral and written activity reports.
- Stay updated with industry advancements, new technologies, and changes in electrical codes.
- May respond to after‑hour emergencies.
- Perform all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
- High School Diploma or GED, along with successful completion of an electrical apprentice program.
- Minimum of five years of experience as an electrician.
- Minimum four (4) years journey-level experience in industrial and commercial electrical installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, and control wiring of electrical distribution gear, motor control centers, uninterrupted/conditioning power systems, power generators, electrical/electronic locking systems, low/high voltage lighting, or related commercial and industrial applications and raceway installations.
- Completion of a state-accredited electrical apprenticeship program.
- Valid Driver’s License to perform field work and/or to operate county owned vehicles.
The Journeyman Electrician has the ability and skill to use a variety of equipment and machinery and has the ability to plan and lay out work to complete tasks and projects on time. Work performed is complex and varied when maintaining emergency equipment.
ResponsibilityThe Journeyman Electrician is responsible for a variety of different operations in order to perform quality control analysis on equipment or supported systems for proper functioning and performs remedial actions necessary to assure optimum operations.
Personal Work RelationshipsThe Journeyman Electrician maintains frequent communication with other County employees, vendors and the general public regarding electrical, phone, internet and A/V installation for the Allen County facilities.
Working ConditionsThe Journeyman Electrician works in buildings requiring frequent walking, some sitting and standing and frequent lifting up to fifty pounds and pushing and/or pulling loads. Very frequent bending, reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders is required. Must have the ability to type including proofreading, attention to detail, monitoring equipment and detailed inspection is required. Are required to work outdoors during extreme weather conditions with exposure to dirt, grease, slippery surfaces and high and low temperatures.

LicensingValid Allen County Journeyman’s License in Electrical, HVAC, Mechanical, or Plumbing preferred. Valid Driver's License to operate county vehicles.

Hours8:00 am – 4:30 pm; 37.5 hours/week; overtime as needed.
