Under the direction of the Deputy Supervisor of Downtown Areas, the Journeyman Electrician is responsible for performing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, trouble‑shooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance involving commercial-level electrical, building controls, electronic heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). This position is Covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
Essential Functions- Responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, components, switchgears, motors, compressors, generators, transformer taps and equipment related to commercial buildings. This includes running wiring, installing switches, outlets, and circuit breakers, and ensuring that all installations comply with relevant electrical codes and regulations.
- Troubleshoot electrical issues and identify the root cause of problems in electrical systems. This involves using various testing devices and techniques to diagnose faults, locate electrical malfunctions, fiber optic cabling, and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to understand the layout and specifications of electrical systems. This enables planning and execution of installations and repairs accordingly.
- Adhere to safety protocols and standards to prevent accidents, electrical hazards, and injuries. This includes following proper lockout/tagout procedures, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Have a strong understanding of electrical codes and regulations. Knowledge to ensure all electrical work meets local, state, and national codes.
- Conduct thorough testing and inspection of electrical systems. Responsible for using specialized equipment to assess the functionality and performance of electrical components, ensuring they meet specified standards and specifications.
- Depending on project size and complexity, work as part of a team. Collaborate with other electricians, contractors, or other tradesmen to coordinate and complete projects. Optimize resource use and minimize service disruptions.
- Lead others in fabrication or modifications of existing or proposed equipment, facilities, systems, or their components from verbal directions, sketches, plans, engineering drawings or technical references.
- Prepare estimates for unique or complex operations, maintenance and special projects from rough sketches and engineering plans or drawings, and document use and expenditures of materials, supplies and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of electrical work. Create work orders, record repairs, and document equipment maintenance through a Computer Maintenance Management System.
- Work directly with other departments, providing excellent customer service. Communicate effectively, address concerns, and ensure satisfaction.
- Prepare oral and written activity reports.
- Stay updated with industry advancements, new technologies, and changes in electrical codes. Engage in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Respond to after‑hour emergencies.
- Perform all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
- High School Diploma or GED, along with successful completion of an electrical apprentice program
- Minimum of five years of experience as an electrician
- Minimum four (4) years journey‑level experience in industrial and commercial electrical installation, maintenance, and repair
- Journey‑level experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, and control wiring of electrical distribution gear, motor control centers, uninterrupted / conditioning power systems, power generators, electrical / electronic locking systems, low / high voltage lighting, or related commercial and industrial applications and…
