Journeyman Electrician – Allen County Maintenance

Looking for an electrical career where no two days are exactly the same?

Allen County Government is seeking an experienced Journeyman Electrician to join our Maintenance team. In this role, you'll use your electrical expertise to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve the systems that keep County facilities operating safely and efficiently.

This isn't limited to routine electrical work.

You'll work with
commercial electrical systems, generators, switch gear, motors, building controls, HVAC-related electrical systems, low- and high-voltage equipment, fiber optic cabling, and more across a variety of County facilities.

What You'll Do

As a Journeyman Electrician, you will:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial electrical systems and equipment.
  • Work with wiring, switches, outlets, circuit breakers, switch gear, motors, compressors, generators, transformers, and related equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical problems using testing equipment and determine the best repair solution.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Perform work involving building controls, HVAC electrical systems, electrical distribution equipment, motor control centers, generators, lighting, and other commercial systems.
  • Test and inspect electrical systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Perform skilled fabrication and modifications to existing equipment, facilities, and systems.
  • Help plan projects, estimate materials, and coordinate work with other skilled trades and County departments.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance records, and project documentation using a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Follow electrical codes, safety requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and other established safety practices.
  • Assist with after-hours emergencies and participate in rotational on-call duties.
  • Stay current on electrical codes, technology, equipment, and industry best practices.
  • Perform other duties and overtime as needed.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a state-accredited electrical apprenticeship program
    .
  • Minimum of five years of experience as an electrician
    .
  • At least four years of journey-level experience in industrial or commercial electrical installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Journey-level experience with commercial or industrial systems such as electrical distribution gear, motor control centers, generators, control wiring, uninterrupted/conditioned power systems, electronic locking systems, low- and high-voltage lighting, and raceway installations.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and national electrical codes.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to operate County vehicles.

Preferred:

  • Valid Allen County Journeyman's License in Electrical, HVAC, Mechanical, or Plumbing.

Working Conditions

This is an active, hands-on skilled trades position. Work may include frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors and can involve exposure to varying temperatures, dirt, grease, slippery surfaces, and other conditions commonly associated with commercial maintenance and electrical work.
