Purpose
Organize, direct, coordinate and oversee various aquatics programs, facility, staff and patrons, promoting and implementing state-of-the-art safety policies and procedures. Works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks. Direct and participate in the preparation, maintenance, processing, analysis and auditing of data, records and reports.
Minimum Qualifications- Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level course work. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Must have three years increasingly responsible experience, lifeguarding, instructing swimming, especially relating to pre-school and school-age students and supervisory experience in an aquatic environment.
- Prefer experience with competitive swimming and meet operations.
- Must possess knowledge of methods, terminology, principles, practices, procedures, materials, requirements, processes and equipment applicable to assigned field.
- Must possess strong analytical, computer, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
- Must have experience working with and involving frequent public contact with a diverse population.
- Must be a licensed lifeguard through Ellis & Associates (International Lifeguard Training Program) and EAVS Operator; be certified in Water Safety Instruction through the American Red Cross; must obtain a lifeguard instructor license through Ellis & Associates (International Lifeguard Training Program) within six (6) months of hire; must obtain an EAVS instructor license within six (6) months of hire; must obtain National Instructor's Certification through the Aquatic Exercise Association within eight (8) months of hire;
must obtain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification within eight (8) months of hire.
- Supervise the facility personnel; assume responsibility for the daily operations of the Natatorium. Assign responsibilities, establish work schedules, and evaluate performance. Conduct required in-service training for staff covering policies and procedures, safety requirements, and specific individual accountabilities.
- Maintain and communicate operating policies and procedures for the facility including instructions, safety regulations and special or emergency procedures to protect the facility and its community. Ensure strict adherence to the established policies and procedures through staff training, postings and enforcement.
- Train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; participate in the interview and selection of employees and recommend disciplinary actions; assign employee duties and review work to assure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established standards, requirements and procedures.
- Provide technical training and assistance to FWCS employees regarding Natatorium activities and related functions; respond to inquiries and provide detailed and technical information concerning related standards, requirements, data, laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Maintain current knowledge of laws, codes, regulations, and pending legislature related to the payroll function; adjust activities to meet state and federal requirements as appropriate.
- Enforce and assure guest compliance with pool use, diving board, lap swimming and other applicable rules, regulations and policies; respond to complaints from guests, staff and others; respond to and report incidents and guest behavior problems to appropriate authorities.
- Provide lifeguard services; water exercise instruction; water safety instruction; teach swim/dive lessons to students, guests, rental groups, athletes and others in a safe and healthy manner as needed. Monitor swimming pool activities to maintain a safe, healthy and controlled environment for the pool. Observe Natatorium pool activities in accordance with established guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Plan, coordinate and provide instructional activities to assure safety of swimming activities; demonstrate, explain and assure student understanding of water safety rules, regulations, standards, procedures, practices, techniques and guidelines.
- Enforce and assure student and guest compliance with pool use, diving board, lap swimming and other applicable rules, regulations and policies; assure guests remain in authorized areas of the pool; respond to complaints from guests, staff and others; report incidents and guest behavior problems to appropriate authorities.
- Provide ongoing instruction and training activities for lifeguards; demonstrate and explain lifeguard practices, procedures, techniques, standards, guidelines, requirements, and related policies, rules and regulations; coordinate, arrange, monitor and follow-up on lifeguard training and in-services as directed.
