Job Description

PURPOSE

The Transportation Driver Trainer coordinates and executes comprehensive instructional programs for school bus drivers. This role ensures all personnel meet federal and state safety standards, maintaining the highest level of safety for student transportation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in student transportation operations.
• Strong organization, communication and multitasking skills.
• Expert knowledge of Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) transportation laws, FMCSA regulations, and industry best practices.
• Advanced organizational, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proficiency in managing training documentation and data entry.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class B, School Bus (S), and Passenger (P) endorsements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Lead Entry‑Level Driver Training (ELDT) classes, ensuring all theory and behind‑the‑wheel (BTW) requirements meet federal FMCSA standards.
• Train and mentor new applicants for CDL skills tests; conduct individual and group sessions to reinforce defensive driving and vehicle handling.
• Coordinate and track all in‑house and external CDL training, including the management of IDOE Safety Certificates (Yellow Cards) and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) data.
• Instruct drivers on critical safety protocols, including bus evacuations, fire extinguisher deployment, accident response, and medical emergencies (seizures, blood borne pathogens, etc.).
• Operate a school bus to provide hands‑on instruction; observe and evaluate trainees on live routes, focusing on student loading/unloading and railroad crossing procedures.
• Certify drivers in the proper operation of lift equipment and the securement of wheelchairs and specialized mobility devices.
• Educate applicants on departmental standards, including two‑way radio etiquette, vehicle maintenance reporting, routing software, and student behavior management.
