Position Title:
Psychiatric Inpatient Medical Director, Department:

The Inpatient Psychiatrist is responsible for delivering direct clinical care and providing day-to-day clinical leadership on a designated inpatient psychiatric unit. This position manages a defined patient caseload and oversees multidisciplinary treatment planning for the assigned unit. The Inpatient Psychiatrist works collaboratively with nursing leadership, social work, and other team members to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care. This role supports quality, safety, and operational excellence on the unit and collaborates with the Psychiatric Inpatient Medical Director on clinical standards, patient flow, and performance improvement efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Serve as attending psychiatrist on an inpatient unit, managing a patient caseload and leading interdisciplinary treatment planning.
- Supervise and/or mentor psychiatric staff such as advanced practice providers, residents, and trainees.
- Collaborate with other attending providers, nursing leadership, social work, and other allied health professionals to support cohesive care delivery and efficient patient flow.
- Support admission, treatment, and discharge processes for assigned unit/patients to ensure compliance with clinical standards, regulatory requirements, and hospital policies.
- Lead and participate in daily team rounds, case conferences, and multidisciplinary meetings.
- Develop and implement clinical guidelines, treatment protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Monitor clinical performance metrics, patient outcomes, and satisfaction; respond to incidents and clinical risk issues as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all documentation, billing, and regulatory standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, and the Texas Administrative Code).
- Participate in staff education, trainee supervision, and ongoing professional development.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships across the care team.
Required
Education and Experience:
- Current Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from an accredited school of medicine.
- Residency training in Psychiatry.
Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
- Current, unrestricted medical license to practice in the State of Texas.
- Board Certification or Board Eligible.
- Minimum one (1) year post-residency experience in inpatient psychiatry preferred or completion of JPS Psychiatry Residency Program.
