Purpose:
The Literacy Coach supports teachers and campus leaders in implementing high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with structured literacy practices and the science of reading. This role is responsible for building teacher capacity through coaching, modeling, data analysis, and professional learning to improve student outcomes in reading, writing, and language development.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
* Bachelor's Degree
* Master's Degree Preferred
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
* Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
* Knowledge of bilingual programs preferred
* Ability to model effective instructional practices
* Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
* Ability to implement policy and procedures
* Ability to interpret data
* Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
* Knowledge of the integration of technology into the district's curriculum
Experience:
* Five years of experience as a classroom teacher
* Two years of experience in instructional leadership roles

Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Coaching and Support:
* Provide job-embedded coaching (modeling, co-teaching, observation, feedback) to teachers on structured literacy practices
* Support teachers in delivering explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction in foundational reading skills
* Assist teachers in aligning instruction to district curriculum and state standards
* Facilitate planning sessions focused on lesson internalization and effective literacy block design
Professional Learning:
* Design and deliver professional development on structured literacy and the science of reading
* Support campus implementation of district literacy initiatives and instructional frameworks
* Build teacher understanding of language structures, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics
Data Analysis & Progress Monitoring:
* Collaborate with teachers and administrators to analyze student data (universal screeners, diagnostics, progress monitoring)
* Support development of targeted intervention plans for struggling readers
* Monitor fidelity of implementation and effectiveness of literacy instruction
Intervention & Support Systems:
* Assist in developing and implementing Tier I, II, and III literacy supports within an MTSS framework
* Provide guidance on intervention programs and progress monitoring tools
* Support identification and instructional planning for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties
Collaboration & Leadership:
* Partner with campus academic leaders to support literacy goals and instructional priorities
* Participate in PLCs and leadership meetings to align instruction and monitor progress
* Serve as a campus/district resource for literacy best practices
Policy, Reports, and Law:
* Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in curriculum and instruction area.
* Compile, maintain, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
Personnel Management:
* Assist with recruitment, selection, and training of personnel.
Communication:
* Provide for two-way communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
* Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community.
* Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.
Community Relations:
* Articulate the campus and district's mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community and solicit its support in realizing the district's mission.
* Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
* Demonstrate use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
Other:
* Attend board meetings regularly and give input on information items as needed.
* Participate in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of rules, regulations, and practices.
* Perform other duties as required by the Supervisor and/or Superintendent.
* Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
* Must be present regularly in person.
