Job Description

Starting at $64,000 + commensurate with experience for 26-27 School Year

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

The primary function of the Counselor is to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance for the school, including counseling services. The Counselor will create a proactive developmental guidance program to encourage all students to maximize personal growth and development.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certifications

• • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
• • Master’s degree preferred.
• • Valid Texas Counseling certificate (or equivalent) required.

Knowledge & Skills

• • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
• • Ability to speak effectively before groups of constituents or employees of the organization.
• • Ability and/or willingness to learn to use and understand Microsoft Office for spreadsheets, letters, and other written communications.
• • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• • Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development.
• • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
• • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior.
• • Ability to manage stressful situations.
• • High level of confidentiality and discretion.

Preferred Experience

• • Prior classroom teaching experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

• Provides consultation to administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents regarding the academic, personal, and social needs of students.
• Collaborates with campus RTL and SST teams in facilitating interventions or strategies to remove barriers to students’ academic success.
• Oversees the implementation of campus-level character and behavior education and intervention programs.
• Collaborates with teachers to incorporate guidance-related information into the existing curriculum.
• Plans and implements school guidance and counseling programs to ensure they meet identified needs.
• Teaches school development guidance curriculum to students.
• Provides individual and/or group counseling for students in need.
• Maintains on‑site regular attendance.
• Uses an effective referral process to refer students who need special programs or services.
• Models behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
• Maintains a variety of student data records and communicates data to students, teachers, and parents as needed.
• Assists teachers and students as needed in the design, implementation, and support of students’ behavior management plans.
• Assists students and parents in transitioning to and planning for middle school and high school.
• Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and board policy in the guidance and counseling area.
• Complies with all district and campus policies and procedures.
• Maintains a positive and effective relationship with administration, staff, students, and parents.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervises campus operations in the absence of the campus principal and vice‑principal.

Mental and Physical Demands & Environmental Factors

Regularly required to sit; use hands to grasp, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. Also required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
