Assistant Professor of Medical Physiology

Position Details

The Burnett School of Medicine at TCU is seeking an outstanding Medical Science Educator (faculty) to deliver active and applied learning sessions in Physiology and related content areas for the integrated Phase 1/Phase 2 basic and clinical sciences curriculum. The educator will also teach within the SOM Anatomical Sciences PhD graduate program as assigned by the chair. Medical Science Educators serve as content experts and collaborate with basic science faculty, course and module directors, and curricular leaders in the development and delivery of Phase 1 and Phase 2 basic science content for medical students and graduate level content for PhD students.

They participate in session planning, including content and instructional modalities, and prepare through participation in review and run-through meetings prior to sessions. The role includes facilitating student learning through active learning modalities and fostering a student-centered environment using a structured framework for reflective inquiry and discussion. Reporting to the Chair for Medical Education and with curricular leadership guidance, this faculty position develops and implements a transformative curriculum that fosters application, critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and lifelong learning.

The position also serves as a faculty facilitator in curricular sessions and supports module directors and other faculty leading the sessions. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative community in a state-of-the-art allopathic medical school in Fort Worth, Texas, within an innovative, learner-centered curriculum that uses case-based and other active learning methods. Successful candidates will have significant experience teaching their discipline in an undergraduate medical school or health professional school and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in medical education.

Duties and

Essential Job Functions:

Education (70%)

• Lead and coordinate components of the integrated undergraduate medical school curriculum and the SOM Anatomical Sciences PhD program in medical physiology and cellular biology, as aligned with the candidate’s expertise.
• Teach in the Phase 1 Mechanism of Health and Disease (MHD) courses and in the Phase 2 curriculum for discipline-specific needs.
• Teach in the SOM Anatomical Sciences PhD graduate program as assigned by the chair.
• Exhibit teaching and facilitation skills that promote student-centered learning.
• Collaborate with course directors and school leaders to develop, review, and refine course materials, including pre-work, session plans, assignments, and assessments within the candidate’s area of expertise.
• Facilitate Step 1 board review content related to physiology and cell biology as needed.
• Evaluate learning effectiveness and adapt instructional content and methods based on feedback and collaboration with curricular leadership.
• Integrate national trends in medical and graduate education into the school’s educational practice.
• Complete faculty development activities to enhance skills in active learning modalities used throughout the curriculum.
• Be available for student consultation, including scheduled office hours.

Research/Scholarship (10%-20%)

• Maintain an active research agenda, focusing on medical education and curricular innovation.

Service/Administration (10%-20%)

• Model professional practice and ethics, and pursue opportunities for ongoing professional development as an educator.
• Complete administrative paperwork in a timely fashion.
• Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected.
• Participate in additional activities as assigned by the Chair of Medical Education and other academic leaders.

Required

Education and Experience:

• PhD, MD or DO degree required.
• Expertise in human physiology or a related field required.
• Knowledge and demonstrated experience in pre-clinical or pre-clerkship medical education program development and assessment.
• Evidence of teaching excellence in undergraduate medical education, health professional education, or graduate education.
• Qualify for academic appointment (Assistant Professor or Associate Professor) in a School of Medicine academic department.
