Automation Specialist

The Automation Specialist supports the design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of automation and control systems for air- and liquid-cooled High-Performance Computing (HPC) data centers. This role works cross-functionally with engineering, site operations, IT, and Dev Ops teams to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and integration of control systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary point of contact for controls and automation systems across HPC data center facilities
• Ensure automation and control systems supporting cooling infrastructure operate efficiently and reliably
• Interpret, maintain, and deploy PLC, controller, and SCADA code
• Troubleshoot automation and controls issues impacting data center operations
• Support design, construction, and commissioning activities throughout project life cycles
• Collaborate with mechanical and cooling engineers to translate operational requirements into control logic
• Follow Management of Change (MOC) procedures and maintain accurate version control documentation
• Coordinate with IT and Dev Ops to ensure proper integration of field signals into enterprise monitoring systems
• Maintain accurate records and documentation related to automation and control systems

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Automation Technology, or related technical field, or relevant industry certification (e.g., from Siemens or Rockwell Automation)
• Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation environments
• Strong understanding of control theory (e.g., PID loops, ON/OFF control with hysteresis)
• Experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, robotics, or scripting languages such as Python
• Proficiency in PLC programming languages (Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, Sequential Function Chart)
• Knowledge of field devices (temperature, pressure, flow, vibration), signal types, and wiring methods
• Familiarity with industrial networks and communication protocols
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and abstract thinking skills
• Ability to work independently with limited direction and manage ambiguity effectively

Additional Requirements

• Pre-employment screening, including background check and substance testing, may be required
• Must provide own steel-toed work boots (other PPE provided)
• Reliable commute to the work site or willingness to relocate prior to start date
