Role Overview
At Alcon, we're passionate about enhancing sight and helping people see brilliantly. As part of Alcon's Engineering function, the Sr. Automation Engineer focuses on improving quality, processes, products, packaging, and materials across our business to deliver brilliant outcomes.
Responsibilities- Design and implement manufacturing technology to automate production processes and equipment.
- Support production operations from an equipment and process troubleshooting standpoint.
- Work with a Project Manager or independently, depending on scope, to develop user and design requirements, choose equipment vendors or build technology in-house, and manage installation of automation.
- Ensure safety compliance, validate the automated system for adherence to requirements, CGMPs, and intended operation.
- Provide support in situations where troubleshooting or technology lies outside of your area of expertise.
- Interact with production supervisors/managers to identify areas to improve equipment throughput, flexibility, quality, safety, and reliability.
- Implement automation solutions resulting from MNC investigations or CAPA assignments.
- Coordinate equipment availability with production to minimize impact during engineering activities.
- Plan and execute engineering project work with minimal supervision.
- Partner with production to identify windows for corrective/preventive action implementation and project work.
- Communicate equipment operational status effectively.
- Develop cost estimates and justifications for capital appropriations; perform engineering evaluations using technical and economic factors and make purchasing recommendations.
- Act as engineering and technical lead for projects.
- Provide technical support for safety and quality improvement initiatives.
- Program PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and inspection systems.
- Manage large capital projects or multiple small capital projects concurrently (potential investment up to $2M).
- Manage the budget for these projects and identify opportunities to reduce overall cost.
- Design and implement modifications to existing manufacturing equipment to improve operational efficiencies.
- Design, install, and validate automated control systems for new or upgraded utilities, compounding processes, and filling and packaging equipment.
- Compose Functional Requirement Specifications (FRSs) for new or upgraded systems.
- Generate and execute Installation and Operational Qualifications (IOQs) and Performance Qualifications (PQs).
- Revise standard operating procedures.
- Lead Manufacturing Non‑Conformance investigations and apply good engineering practices to reduce repeat non‑conformances.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions to improve manufacturing operational efficiencies.
- Perform risk assessments and risk mitigation activities using systematic tools.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in a related field, or high school +10 years experience; associate +6 years; M.S. +0 years.
- Fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to be flexible with work assignments, hours, shifts, and days of the week.
- Experience with equipment/process control, system troubleshooting, and documentation of corrections and change control.
- Knowledge of safety and quality improvement initiatives.
