A growing structural steel and utility structures manufacturer is seeking an experienced Lead Drafter Checker to support fabrication drawing review, detailing quality control, and drafting standardization efforts across complex structural steel and large structure projects. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring fabrication and submittal drawings meet engineering intent, manufacturing requirements, customer specifications, and internal drafting standards prior to production release.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive Solid Works experience within structural steel, metals manufacturing, utility structures, or other large, fabricated structure environments and possess strong technical expertise reviewing assemblies, weldments, fabrication drawings, and structural detailing packages.
Duties- Perform final reviews and checking of fabrication and submittal drawings prepared by detailers and drafting personnel prior to production release.
- Verify drawings for alignment with engineering design intent, manufacturing capabilities, internal drafting standards, customer specifications, and applicable industry codes/standards.
- Review customer-provided plans, specifications, and drawings while identifying and resolving discrepancies with engineering, drafting, and operations teams.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to drafting personnel to improve drawing quality, consistency, and overall department accuracy.
- Support development and improvement of drafting procedures, checking standards, workflows, and department best practices.
- Review assemblies, subassemblies, weldments, and fabrication details to ensure manufacturability and production readiness.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, drafting, manufacturing, and operations teams to support project execution and production schedules.
- Complete drawing reviews and project deliverables within required deadlines and production timelines.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required. Technical drafting/design education strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10+ years of Solid Works experience supporting detailing, drafting, and design within structural steel, steel fabrication, utility structures, metals manufacturing, or other large fabricated structure environments.
- Strong experience reviewing structural fabrication drawings, weldments, assemblies, subassemblies, and manufacturing documentation.
- Extensive experience utilizing Solid Works as the primary drafting/detailing platform.
- Strong understanding of AWS weld symbols, fabrication standards, and AISC structural standards.
- Ability to conceptualize large structural assemblies and understand how fabricated components integrate into final structures.
- Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams in production-driven environments.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and project deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to work overtime as project schedules and production demands require.
- Strong communication skills and ability to mentor/detail-review junior drafting personnel.
