Senior Engineer – Wastewater Pretreatment & Chemical Process Operations

Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer for a direct-hire opportunity in Fort Worth, TX. This position serves as the technical and operational lead for a facility’s wastewater pretreatment and chemical process operations, overseeing plant operations, maintenance, engineering modifications, capital improvements, personnel, and contractors. The Senior Engineer will be responsible for maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance while identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability, process efficiency, safety, quality, and overall operations.

This role requires a hands‑on engineering leader with significant experience in wastewater pretreatment, chemical processing, plant operations, mechanical systems, and maintenance. The ideal candidate brings 7+ years of relevant operations or maintenance experience, proven leadership experience managing plant personnel, and the technical expertise to troubleshoot complex process and equipment issues while leading facility improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities Plant Operations & Leadership
  • Lead day-to-day operations of the wastewater pretreatment and chemical process facility.
  • Manage plant personnel, including operators, supervisors, mechanics, and technicians.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, emergency repairs, and operational activities.
  • Provide technical direction and troubleshooting support for plant operations and maintenance issues.
  • Monitor plant performance and identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, quality, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Promote compliance with established safety procedures, operating standards, and facility requirements.
Wastewater & Process Engineering
  • Oversee the operation and performance of wastewater pretreatment systems and associated chemical and mechanical processes.
  • Perform periodic inspections of water-wipe conveyance systems supporting Intaglio press operations.
  • Monitor water quality and investigate wastewater wipe upsets originating from press pits.
  • Evaluate existing plant processes and recommend equipment, design, engineering, and operational modifications.
  • Support the design and implementation of improvements to chemical processes, mechanical systems, and process controls.
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications, engineering documentation, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Engineering Projects & Maintenance
  • Lead plant upgrades, equipment replacements, equipment overhauls, mechanical system modifications, and other facility improvement projects.
  • Manage engineering and design specifications, project submittals, pricing requisitions, purchase orders, invoices, contract modifications, and addendums.
  • Coordinate subcontractor construction and installation crews performing mechanical system replacements and modifications.
  • Monitor project schedules, costs, technical requirements, installation quality, and project completion.
  • Evaluate plant maintenance practices and recommend redesigns or improvements to increase equipment reliability and operational performance.
Troubleshooting & Emergency Response
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, process, equipment, and operational issues and develop effective corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support during equipment failures, process disruptions, and emergency repairs.
  • Serve as a member of the facility’s Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT).
  • Assist with the containment, response, and cleanup of hazardous and non-hazardous spills in accordance with established safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an applied science discipline with relevant professional experience.
  • 7+ years of operations or maintenance experience within a chemical process, wastewater pretreatment, industrial wastewater, or similar process facility.
