As a
Summer Intern for the Environmental & Sustainability team, students will experience life as a full-time employee, working on impactful, real-life assignments and projects that apply their skills and education. The Environment & Sustainability department ensures BNSF operations protect the well-being of the environment, comply with environmental laws, prevent, and reduce environmental risk, and deploy sustainable solutions to reduce our environmental footprint.
Successful interns may be hired as full-time Management Trainees upon graduation.
This is a full-time position located in Fort Worth, TX. For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely. Our leaders also foster a culture where work life balance, which requires flexibility for when life happens, is important and respected.
Travel is minimal, must have reliable transportation to and from work.
Relocation is required if located more than 50 miles from the location.
Training will start with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking with leaders. This will be followed by support on ongoing projects and practical training with the department.

Key responsibilities may include:
Collaborating with a diverse team of subject-matter experts to understand and advise on sustainability strategy.
Opportunities to influence future innovation and work on projects related to next generation locomotives, charging, facility electrification, and other future innovations.
Working with the BNSF commercial team to leverage sustainability strategy to deliver value for customers.
Participate in meaningful projects with visibility across BNSF which may include:
- Collaborating and developing strategies for managing scope 3 emissions sources in annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting.
- Benchmarking and developing sustainability strategies to support customer growth.
- Collaborating with advanced energy innovation team on projects related to BNSF’s sustainability strategy.
- Leveraging technology to support sustainability strategies.
Possess leadership, teamwork, clear communication, adaptability, and resilience to overcome obstacles and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
Daily work is conducted in an indoor office environment.

Basic Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
- Does not require BNSF’s assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
- Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in natural Science (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, etc.), Engineering, Sustainability, OR a similar degree program from an accredited university.
