This position is for 1 (one) Transportation Engineer Specialist III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques; trains and reviews the work of others; others. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. May serve as lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.
Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
- Performs advanced and specialized design work.
- Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
- Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors
- Trains less experienced technicians.
- Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience8 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
