Position Summary: The Late Stage Collections Specialist is responsible for managing delinquent accounts that are 60+ days past due through resolution. This role focuses on borrower engagement, payment negotiations, workout coordination with Credit, and preparation for legal or asset recovery when necessary. The position requires strong financial acumen, negotiation skills, regulatory compliance, and customer service professionalism.
- Proactively contact borrowers on accounts 60+ days past due via phone, email, and written communication.
- Analyze payment history, financial condition, and collateral status to determine appropriate resolution strategy.
- Negotiate repayment plans, short-term forbearance, and settlements within delegated authority.
- Secure and monitor ACH commitments and payoff arrangements.
- Prepare detailed case summaries for Credit and Workout Committees.
- Implement approved restructures or workout plans and track ongoing compliance.
- Escalate non-performing files for legal action or asset recovery per policy.
- Coordinate with internal Legal and Asset Management on default remedies, UCC enforcement, repossession, and liquidation.
- Ensure documentation packages are complete for counsel and recovery vendors.
- Monitor timelines and costs related to legal and recovery actions.
- Maintain accurate notes, call logs, and payment promises in the loan servicing system.
- Ensure all activity complies with FDCPA, UCC, state lending laws, and company policies.
- Handle borrower complaints professionally and elevate to Compliance as required.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for distressed borrowers.
- De-escalate difficult conversations while protecting the company’s financial position.
- Educate customers on consequences of default and available resolution options.
Required Education, Experience, and
Qualifications:
- 3–7+ years of experience in commercial collections, equipment finance, or specialty lending.
- Strong understanding of loan documentation, UCC filings, and secured collateral.
- Working knowledge of workout, legal, and asset recovery processes.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.
- High attention to detail and strong CRM/loan system documentation discipline.
- Preferred background in equipment finance, leasing, or asset-backed lending.
- Experience working with attorneys, repossession agents, and auction partners.
- Exposure to credit underwriting or portfolio management.
Working Conditions:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
- Positions self to install equipment, including under desks.
- Moves throughout the building to access files.
- Must be able to comprehend and follow written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to complete tasks even with frequent interruptions.
- Must be able to use discretion and independent judgment as needed.
- Must be able to speak clearly on the phone and to fellow workers.
