CONTRACT/FRACTIONAL CONTROLLER (not full-time)

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on accounting professional to support the day-to-day financial operations of a big box organization. This role will be responsible for managing accounting processes, supporting financial reporting, overseeing transactional accounting activities, coordinating tax and insurance matters, and assisting with various administrative functions. The ideal candidate will be comfortable wearing multiple hats and partnering with leaders across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Analyze financial results and investigate variances.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting activities.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
  • Oversee incoming and outgoing cash flow activities.
  • Manage accounts payable processes, including vendor payments and invoice approvals.
  • Monitor accounts receivable, collections, and customer account balances.
  • Ensure timely processing of transactions and accurate recording within the general ledger.
  • Reconcile cash accounts and assist with treasury-related activities.
Tax & Compliance
  • Assist with accounting-related tax matters and compliance requirements.
  • Coordinate store and sales tax filings across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Support property tax and business tax filings as needed.
  • Work with external tax advisors and auditors to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for tax-related matters.
Insurance Administration
  • Coordinate insurance renewals and maintain relationships with insurance brokers and carriers.
  • Assist with claims administration and tracking.
  • Maintain insurance schedules and support risk management initiatives.
  • Ensure locations and assets are appropriately covered under company policies.
Administrative & Operational Support
  • Provide administrative support related to finance and accounting operations.
  • Maintain corporate records, contracts, and financial documentation.
  • Assist with vendor management and operational reporting.
  • Support special projects, process improvements, and system implementations.
  • Serve as a resource for store operations and other departments on accounting-related matters.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Retail/Big Box Retail industry knowledge
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Retail, multi-location, distribution, or consumer products experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, general ledger accounting, and reconciliations.
  • Experience with sales tax, store tax, and other indirect tax compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
  • Experience coordinating insurance-related activities is a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP/accounting systems.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
