Ultrasound Technologist

The Ultrasound Technologist, under general supervision of a Radiologist or physician, performs ultrasound procedures. These procedures are conducted in both ambulatory and hospital environments as requested by a physician or other licensed provider for the diagnosis of disease and injury. This is done in accordance with established protocols. The technologist performs high quality ultrasound procedures according to exam protocol in a timely manner.

They maintain production and quality of imaging procedures by following established standards and procedures. Utilizing AIDET when communicating with patients is essential. The technologist identifies patient service requirements, ensures the correct exam is performed on the correct patient, and establishes rapport with patients and others. They instruct and communicate with patients and their families regarding the test to be performed and assess the patient's ability to tolerate the exam.

Preparing the patient and area for the procedure involves positioning the patient, adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into specified positions, and adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors. The technologist protects patients and team members by adhering to safety requirements, infection control, drug, and radiation policies, protocols, and techniques. They use proper sterile techniques when setting up and performing invasive multimodality procedures and maintain hand hygiene requirements.

Maintaining equipment and work area to meet quality and cleanliness standards is crucial. They work with engineers and physicists to ensure optimal operational capabilities of equipment. Reporting issues to management or the appropriate department is expected. Assisting in maintaining supplies inventory is also part of the role. Screening individuals to ensure they are safe to enter the department is necessary according to approved policies and procedures.

The technologist obtains, verifies, and maintains all relevant documentation such as requisitions, patient histories, pregnancy statuses, shielding precautions taken, consent forms, policies, and procedures. Imaging team members are expected to adhere to policies, procedures, and workflows. These system workflows include PACS, EMR, image exchange systems, modality worklist integrity, record management, and Bio Med services. Maintaining medical imaging records in the appropriate system according to department policies and standards for interpretation in a timely manner is essential.

Key success factors include the ability to perform high quality ultrasound procedures according to exam protocol in a timely manner. The technologist should explain the procedure and put patients viding services in a timely, accurate, and cost-efficient manner in compliance with established standards, policies, and procedures is important. The ability to perform tasks independently without routine oversight is required. Maintaining a calm and helpful attitude even under times of stress and taking appropriate steps to resolve issues is expected.

Ability to effectively administer first aid and use emergency cart is also necessary. Ensuring customer satisfaction by limiting wait times, providing courteous service, remaining professional, reviewing patient satisfaction scores, and developing action plans when required is important. The technologist demonstrates and maintains current knowledge, continued education, and skills appropriate for care for specific age groups including newborns, pediatric, young adults, adults, and geriatrics.

Serving as a trainer by providing quality training to new team members and on new services and initiatives is required. The ability to take call if required is also part of the role.
