The Spanish Interpreter will provide patients, families, visitors, and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face-to-face encounters during designated hours. Spanish Interpreters are bilingual and proficient in English and Spanish with the ability to interpret health care information to and from Spanish‑speaking patients/patients' families and Cook Children's health care providers. They will act as a language liaison between the patient, family, and staff in support of the medical plan of care.
They facilitate acquisition of interpreter services for non‑Spanish languages (via OPI/over the phone, VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services).
Must be available to work various hours including morning, evening, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
NoteWill require full time in‑person training for 4‑6 weeks at Cook Children's Fort Worth Medical Center.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 1‑2 years of experience working in a healthcare setting.
- Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
- Previous interpretation/translation experience (preferred).
- Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patient's native language.
- Strong interpersonal, flexibility, and customer service skills.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
- Selected applicants will be tested on their Spanish proficiency level to determine oral, reading, and writing skills prior to an offer being made, and must test at a proficient level as defined by Cook Children's Health Care System to qualify.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers is required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained.
