PRIMARY PURPOSETo perform a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping in clean, sanitary and orderly condition and to perform other tasks related to the area of assignment.
Essential Responsibilities- High Dusting:
Using a treated high duster, begin cleaning in a counter clockwise direction around the room—high dust surfaces above shoulder height (lights above doors, curtain tips, vents, ledges). Clean the high duster by gently brushing in a downward direction into the service cart. - Sanitizing / Spot Cleaning:
Using a germicidal solution, work counter clockwise around the room, sanitizing surfaces below shoulder height (ledges, chairs, telephone, countertops, trashcans). Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls; spot clean windows. - Bathroom Cleaning:
Use germicidal solution, wipe down in order: above and below sink; toilet seat and outside of toilet bowl; inside toilet with a mop and solution, focusing on rim; check and refill soap/paper dispensers daily. - Empty Trash Cans:
If liquid inside, remove liner, wipe trash can, place clean liner. - Floor Dusting or Vacuuming:
Use a treated dust mophead, start at the back, use "S" stroke; vacuum starting at back moving toward door, under chairs and furniture.
Outside areas should be cleaned and checked several times during the day. The following tasks are performed:
- Empty and clean ash urns and trash cans.
- Police sidewalks, flower beds, curb lines for trash and cigarette butts.
- Spot clean spills on sidewalk; remove gum with scraper; wipe benches and vending machines.
- Wipe lower window ledges; high dust for dust and cobwebs; clean public area glass as necessary.
- Police parking lot for trash.
- Dust mop and spot mop main hallways.
- Clean glass several times per day.
- Clean planters free from bird waste inside and out.
- Check for cob webs; high dust window areas at least twice per week; check corners and edges for dirt, cob webs, debris.
- Clean, remove trash and sanitize tables. Place chairs back under tables. Spot clean spills.
- Empty and clean trash cans.
- Remove accumulated dirty trays, wash room and clean using tray power washer, stack clean trays on shelf for recycled use.
- Police outside eating areas.
Using the proper germicidal solution, start at the back when sanitizing the floor. Mop under furniture and behind doors as you back out of the room. After completing the room, mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement, correcting as needed.
Hall, Lobby, Stairs, Water Fountains, FurnitureWall spotting and high dusting is done daily.
Customer Relations and Service- Knock lightly on door before entering, if occupied.
- Be friendly and cheerful to customers; answer questions or refer them appropriately.
- Report any broken or out-of-order items to supervisor.
- Work quietly; reduce or eliminate noise.
- Maintain clean and neat personal appearance.
- Report to supervisor if work assignment not completed by end of shift.
Perform other duties as assigned or directed by supervisor and/or account manager, which may include (but not limited to) floor care—stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrub and buffing of floors.
Qualifications- Knowledge of basic janitorial operations, methods, materials, and equipment.
- Basic safe work practices and use of toxic/non‑toxic chemicals per MSDS sheets.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively with co‑workers and supervisors.
- Operate powered and non‑powered janitorial equipment.
- Interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to performance: walking, standing, sitting extended periods; lift 1–30 lbs; push/pull equipment; climbing stairs and ladders; bending, twisting, balancing; kneeling, crouching, crawling; reach and handle equipment; overhead reaching; sight coordination.
