Position Overview
Willbanks Metals, Inc. is hiring a skilled Sub Arc Welder to support production in our Welding Department. This role is responsible for setting up and operating submerged arc welding equipment to produce quality welds on plate, structural components, and fabricated assemblies. The ideal candidate is experienced, dependable, safety-focused, and ready to contribute immediately in a fast-paced fabrication environment.
What You Will Do- Set up, operate, and monitor submerged arc welding equipment to complete production welds per drawings and welding procedures.
- Interpret blueprints, weld symbols, process travelers, and job requirements before welding begins.
- Select correct wire, flux, and machine settings to achieve required weld quality and penetration.
- Perform fit-up support, tacking, and multi-pass welds on plate and fabricated components as needed.
- Inspect finished welds visually and with gauges, and complete repairs when required.
- Handle material safely using overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment.
- Maintain equipment, manage flux properly, and keep the work area clean, organized, and safe.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in submerged arc welding or comparable heavy plate/structural welding work.
- Ability to read blueprints, weld symbols, and welding procedures accurately.
- Working knowledge of SAW processes, weld quality requirements, joint preparation, and distortion control.
- Experience working in a fabrication, pressure vessel, or similar industrial welding environment.
- Strong measurement, shop math, and material handling skills.
- Dependable work history, strong safety habits, and commitment to quality and production schedules.
- Pay rate: $30.00 per hour.
- Non-exempt hourly position.
- Immediate hiring need; this position is expected to be filled as soon as possible.
- Schedule and shift details will be discussed during the hiring process.
- Industrial welding environment with exposure to hot work, sparks, fumes, moving equipment, and variable temperatures.
- Frequent standing, bending, reaching, climbing, and welding for extended periods.
- Use of required PPE, including welding hood, gloves, safety glasses, protective clothing, and steel-toe boots.
